What are Ingrown Hairs?
And how do you deal with them?

1.22.2024

Let's start by determining what exactly are ingrown hairs? Ingrown hairs are basically hairs that grow inwards (into the skin) and get trapped under the surface of the top layer of skin after hair removal methods like shaving, waxing, or tweezing.

The most common areas where ingrown hairs are typically found include the bikini area, underarms, chin, cheeks, neck (for men) and sometimes the legs.

Ingrown hairs can appear anywhere on the body where hair is removed from shaving, tweezing, or waxing. Common symptoms of ingrown hairs are itchiness, irritation, inflammation, bumps, or breakouts and in some cases can show up as mild to painful pimples on the skin.

Methods for getting rid of ingrown hairs:

There are some things you can do right at home to help get rid of annoying stubborn ingrown hairs:

1. Exfoliation. An accumulation of dead skin can cause clogged pores so exfoliation is key to helping treat and prevent hairs from growing backwards into the skin. Methods of exfoliation can include using a salt, sugar, or coffee scrub, a dry brush, an exfoliating pad, or even a loofah with gentle soap for those with very sensitive skin.

2. Serums. Ingrown hair serums are designed with specific ingredients in mind to help to treat and release trapped hair follicles.

3. Nourishing oils. Lightweight oils that are not comedogenic (meaning they will not clog your pores) are designed with ingredients that soften the skin & hair allowing trapped hair to loosen up and continue growing towards the surface of your skin so it can be removed.

4. Regular Washing. Cleansing the area impacted with the ingrown hair regularly in a focused circular motion repeatedly can help loosen up the hair that is trapped and overtime the hair follicle will begin to grow outwards (towards the surface of the skin) so it can be pulled out with a proper hair removal technique.

Ingrown hairs can be caused from allowing too much dead skin to accumulate over time or can develop when using a hair removal method improperly. (ex: shaving in the wrong direction, applying wax in the wrong direction, or not using a quality wax).

How can I avoid getting ingrown hairs?

It's difficult to say for sure if ingrown hairs can ever be prevented. If you partake in hair removal involving shaving, tweezing or waxing then you may experience ingrown hairs at some point in your life.

*The best tip is to do regular exfoliation 1-2 times a week using one of the exfoliation methods we mentioned above to ensure the dead skin gets removed from the surface on a regular basis. As long as exfoliation is taking place then it lessens your chances of dead skin building up, clogging your pores and causing trapped and sometimes painful hair.
