As you know from our previous blog post June is “acne awareness month” and we are bringing more education & skin awareness about acne and its aftermath to the forefront! If you have acne or experience constant breakouts then you might experience common skin issues like clogged pores, inflammation, a lot of blackheads or pimples, uneven skin texture, or HYPERPIGMENATION aka dark spots or acne scars.
WHAT IS HYPERPIGMENTATION? WHAT CAUSES IT? HOW DO YOU GET RID OF IT? These are the most common questions you might be asking.
Hyperpigmentation simply means there are darker areas of the skin that are produced from an overproduction of melanin which then show up in forms like dark patches, dark spots or are spread out over larger areas of the face or skin. Other common terms related to hyperpigmentation include age spots, melasma, acne scars, or even sun spots from too much sun exposure.
Things like lifestyle changes, diets heavy in dairy, medications, excessive sun exposure, changes in hormones or body pH, or even pregnancy can cause some form of hyperpigmentation.

Hyperpigmentation can be treated or removed using many different methods ranging from prescribed medications (like retinoids), to changes in diet (like cutting out dairy), to using topical products with potent ingredients specifically for dark spots (like Vitamin C, Niacinamide, Retinol, Kojic Acid, Licorice Root, Hydroquinone, or SPF 30+). Other common methods used by skincare specialists to get rid of dark spots can also include chemical peels or aesthetic lasers or IPL’s (light therapy treatments) to remove deeper hyperpigmentation. If you start out with anything, try starting out with Vitamin C to treat your dark spots. Whether it’s a cleanser, serum, or weekly mask. Vitamin C can help brighten skin and reduce dark spots including hyperpigmentation caused from breakouts.
